1794: UT is founded in Knoxville as Blount College
1807: Blount College becomes East Tennessee College
1826: East Tennessee College moves to the Hill
1840: The college is renamed East Tennessee University
1862–65: University activity is suspended during the Civil War
1869: The university is designated one of Tennessee’s land-grant institutions
1879: East Tennessee University is renamed the University of Tennessee
1902: UT football team is first called Volunteers
1921: Ayres Hall is completed
1968: The UT System is created

Retirement
All regular, full-time employees must participate in one of the state of Tennessee’s retirement plans.
Regular, part-time employees may join a retirement plan. Those who elect to participate are subject to the same terms and conditions as members with mandatory participation.

Educational Assistance
Thinking about going back to school at UT? The Educational Assistance benefit is designed to assist regular employees with payment of undergraduate or graduate level tuition. This benefit also provides a student fee discount for regular employees’ spouses and dependent children who are classified as undergraduate students at the University of Tennessee.
Volunteer Opportunities
On May 24, 2022, Chancellor Plowman announced a new policy that allows regular employees to use up to eight paid work hours each year to engage in volunteer service. The UTK policy when into effect July 1, 2022.
